Doing the Time Warp

There are three ways to experience sin.

You are Cain, and you smite your brother. You are Abel, and your brother doth smite you. Or you are a journalist: you observe the act, write about it; and submit it to your editor before the deadline.

1. In a bit of a mind-flip. you enter the time-slip.

The journalist on this story was Ben Schmitt, a staff writer for the Detroit Free Press.

Detroit January 2008:
"Family questions death in the cold--Man wore hospital gown, no coat in frigid temperatures . . . Family members' last image of Herman Chaney: His body in the morgue, clad in a hospital gown, identification bracelet, T-shirt and boxer shorts . . . No shoes, no pants, no coat . . . Now, they want answers as to why the 48-year-old Detroit man was found frozen to death this week on the streets of Detroit . . . he had a hospital identification bracelet on his body and the family believes he was at Detroit Receiving [Hospital] . . . "There are some cases that speak for themselves," [Attorney Mark] Bernstein said. "And when a man walks out of a hospital in a gown and boxer shorts -- no shoes, no coat, no hat -- somebody should be held accountable."

This is the story journalist Schmitt told.

Herman Chaney was a 48 year old man, from Detroit. He had developed a seizure disorder that had been the result of a closed head injury that he sustained around 1990.

Chaney's recurring seizures required frequent hospitalizations and visits to various emergency rooms. He had received prior treatment for the condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

On new years eve, Chaney went to the emergency room at Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment after suffering another seizure.

As is usual emergency room procedure, the patient was undressed for examination, He wore the usual hospital "gown"; loose fitting slippers, and an identification bracelet was put on his wrist.

In all probability the ER was packed with cases on that new year's eve. Chaney was likely to have been set by triage to a low priority. Detroit Receiving Hospital officials said that they cannot produce any records of Chaney being a patient there on new year's eve. But the identification bracelet offered evidence that Chaney had been accepted by the hospital for treatment.

A mere 30 minutes into the new year, Chaney was discharged from the ER and told to go home.

Three hours later, Chaney was observed on the street. He was alive and was about 8 miles north of the hospital. He was wearing nothing but a hospital gown, and slippers. The people who observed Chaney called 911. That is all they did.

Chaney, froze to death. His body was found about six hours later.

Three days later the Free Press editor, in what was an act of editorial triage, put the lead of this story on the first page of the Local News section and concluded it above the obituaries on page 5B.

2. It's just a jump to the left; and then a step to the right.

Detroit Michigan, July 2002

I had a pinched nerve and could not move from the waist down. I was in great pain. Somehow, the ambulance crew got me to the emergency room of a large hospital.

I was on a gurney and waiting to be admitted to the hospital. I was in great pain and I was scared. I wore a hospital gown, fuzzy disposable slippers and an identification bracelet on my wrist.

But I was assured that as soon as a room was prepared for me, I would be transfered.

Then there was a call over the loud speaker system and just about all the ER staff seemed to vanish. There had been a massive pile-up, a truck and multiple car crash on a nearby freeway. The EMS was bringing in victims, at least half a dozen broken bodies to be cared for. At least half a dozen patients and about 20 family members.

Triage determined the allocation of scarce medical resources. As a result, I in full tilt boogie pain and fear due to a pinched nerve went to the back of the line.

Three hours passed, and finally I got some attention. A nurse came and told me to take a couple of Advil and get ready to go home, because I was being discharged.

I could not get up off the gurney. I could not put on my own clothing. There was no way I could take a cab on my own. But I could talk, and I could speak the dialect of institutional English used by hospital social workers. (I used to work as a drug counselor in a hospital.)

Two more hours passed. The accident victims had all either died, been admitted, or were sent home to tend to their injuries. And I had negotiated with doctors and nurses for an admission to the hospital for a short period of observation.

3. With your hand on your hips; you bring your knees in tight.

Flint Michigan, January 1986

I was working the night shift as a substance abuse counselor at the detoxification unit of Flint Osteopathic hospital. An older woman was brought up to the unit strapped to a gurney. The woman was suffering seizures at the time. Had she not been strapped in place, she would have bounced off the gurney and continued her seizure on the floor.

It was one of my jobs to read the case folder and interview the patient so that the case history could be updated. In 1980 the woman got caught in a crossfire and taken a bullet that had damaged her lower spine--not severed, but damaged beyond repair. So she suffered from the shakes. Her legs and hips would go into spasms. When she shook, she would take meds--pain killers and anti-spasmodics. This woman came to the detox unit because she had overdosed.

Her symptoms were not like those of an epileptic seizure. When she suffered, she was fully conscious and could speak her mind. When the meds failed her, either too weak or too few to do the trick, she would call out to Jesus.

It was three in the morning and I was on duty in the detox ward; doing rounds of the unit. I could hear her entreaties. Jesus was not answering her. I took it upon myself to take His place.

I entered her room, did not turn on the light, and went to her bedside. "I am here," I said.

"Are you Jesus?"

Not wishing to risk eternal damnation I simply repeated "I am here."

I think she calmed down a bit. I placed both hands on her, one hand on each hip. And I commanded her to feel my hands.

"Yes, Lord," she said and calmed down further. The shaking had ended.

My next command was this, "Go to sleep, my child." And she did just that.

My shift ended, and I took my blasphemous self home. I slept soundly, and woke up refreshed, because God had decided that I should not die and go to Hell in the night.
Next day I was scheduled for the afternoon shift. I did my rounds, wanting to see the woman, see how she was doing. She was gone--discharged. I do not think she got up out of her bed on her own and walked out of the hospital.

4. But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane

Good Eats !!Truth and consequences

1. Introduction

There are neo-conservative policy makers in Washington who believe that the United States was attacked by Islamic jihadists on September 11, 2001 because the Bill Clinton administration dismantled the military and intelligence establishment; and left the country vulnerable and blind to the threat of terrorism. In this world view, those who commit suicide to attack our country are mad fiends. They hate America because they hate freedom.

I disagree. If this view were an accurate picture, then re-armament and war would seem to be reasonable responses. Negotiation with such a fanatical enemy would appear to be futile. If shock and awe tactics didn't work at first; we must try them and try them again.

I believe that the clumsiness of the Clinton administration's foreign policy during the 1990s brought about hundreds of thousands of deaths of children in Iraq. The deaths were through diseases that resulted from shortages of food and medicine that Iraq endured during the period of American sponsored economic sanctions. This was during the interval between the end of the first war with Iraq and the end of the Clinton presidency (1991-2000).

These sanctions were imposed on Iraq because the Clinton administration believed that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. Our president, George Bush,has been castigated for going to war because he believed bad intelligence about WMD in Iraq. It was the Clinton administration that first gathered and interpreted this material; and used it to justify the sanctions.

The United Nations reported that there were 5000 deaths of Iraqi children per month, for the years 1991 through 2002. That is a total of more than 500,000 children dead, as the indirect result of the sanctions imposed on Iraq by the Clinton administration between 1992 and 2000. Clinton punished Iraq and its children for having WMD. It was an unjust punishment. Iraq did not have WMD at the time when its children were getting sick and dying. Part of the motivation for continued terrorist activity is revenge.

Hillary Clinton is running for president. I do not see Hillary distancing herself from the foreign policy of her husband. I see no apology nor contrition from either Clinton. I suspect that a new Clinton administration is likely to act like the old one.

2. Crimes and misdemeanors

In the years preceeding 9/11, the journalistic establishment was fixated on other matters than the genocidal consequences of the Clinton sanctions. What were they looking at instead? For one thing they were looking at the overblown scandal involving adultery in the Oval office. They were also looking out for the Y2K monster. And the public expected the western world to come to a halt on January 1, 2000. And they prepared: buying all the bottled water and freeze dried lasagna they could cram into a safe room. They also bought more guns and more ammo.

Misdemeanors, misdemeanors and hoaxes--but at this time the United States, under the leadership of Bill Clinton,was committing crimes in Iraq.

Instead of looking at our foreign policy and examining what kind of suffering our sanctions imposed, the major media were making a big deal out of the president's sexual indiscretion and a possible computer glitch.

3. An eye for an eye, and a confession

Reader, examine your own heart.

What if one of the hundreds of thousands of young ones dead--due to the sanctions imposed by the United States on Iraq--had been your son or daughter? What if you lost one of your siblings? How would you feel about the United States then? Would you want to seek revenge?

When a foreign power, the al Qaeda network, brought about the mass slaughter of innocents, I wanted revenge.

If I believed that the actions imposed by a foreign power on my homeland was responsible for the death of my children, I would seek vengeance. I would send the surviving women and children of my family away, tell them to get the hell out of town. I would take up arms and go after the ones responsible for the deaths of my family members. If I actually thought the person responsible for the deaths in my family was a Muslim cleric, or Iraqi militant, there would not be a rat hole where he could hide from my rage.

I am a registered voter. I do hold the Bill Clinton presidential administration responsible for its failed foreign policy; a policy that set up the country for the Bush war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I do not to see want more of the same.

1. Words – Human Events

Early in 2007 there was a political storm surrounding Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim ever elected to Congress. It had been reported that on the 24^th of December 06, Ellison made this statement as part of an address given in Dearborn: “On January 4, I will go swear an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. I’ll place my hand on the Quran.”

Congressman Virgil Goode (R-VA), sounded the alarm that Islamic Americans who run for office represent a danger to the Christian/American way of life. He said, “If American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran . . . I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary.”

* Consumption: Increase the consumption of scarce resources.
* Welfare: Make heavy use of social welfare systems.
* Overpopulation: May sometimes overpopulate countries (Or abandon their native countries)
* Ethnicity: Can swamp a native population and replace its culture with their own.
* In some cases deplete their countries of origin of badly needed skills (known as the "brain drain").

2. Sticks – KKK

Virgil Goode and Tom Winter preach the doctrine of Nativism. But those are just words. They won’t break anyone's bones. The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan are an example of a contemporary organization devoted to Nativism.

Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is the name of several past and present organizations in the United States that have advocated white supremacy, anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, racism, homophobia, anti-Communism and nativism. These organizations have often used terrorism, violence, and acts of intimidation, such as cross burning and lynching, to oppress African Americans and other social or ethnic groups.

In the late 1920’s the KKK had about 5 million members nationwide. In some parts of the mid-west

40% of those who were eligible (white, protestant men) were members. The Klan controlled the state governments of Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Indiana, where Klansman Edward Jackson was elected governor of Indiana, and filled the state governing apparatus with appointees who were Klan members.

“In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan, at the height of its influence and popularity, decided to make Anaheim a model Klan city. In 1924, the Klan secretly managed to get four of its members elected to the five-member Board of Trustees. Nine of the ten members of the police force were also Klansmen. The four Klan trustees served for nearly a year, until they were publicly exposed, and voted out in a recall election in which 95% of the population participated.”

Anaheim, California is no longer known as the model KKK city. Now it is known as the home of the Mighty Ducks NHL hockey team and the happy kingdom of Disneyland.

The Klan is quite active in Bay City, Saginaw, Midland and other parts of Michigan. There is a television show that is on the air every Friday night called “This is the Klan-This is the Truth.”

This program has the appearance of being a religious talk show. It features commentary by Pastor Thomas Robb and Spokeswoman Rachel Pendergraft. It is taped in Harrison, Arizona and distributed to public access cable stations all over the country, including Midland, Michigan. You can look at a recent program online at http://www.whitepride.tv/ .

Pendergraft is the national membership coordinator of the KKK. Pastor Thomas Robb is the national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

It was public exposure through a free and vigorous press that drove the KKK from the halls of power back to the dark recesses of the margin. The Klan was not killed, but when their presence was exposed, the public shunned them. Every decade or so, it is necessary for an outcry that will bring the public to shun Nativists like the Klan again; and drive them back underground. This is our tine to expose them for what they are.

3. Stones – Vigilantes

The Emigration Party of Nevada is a vigilante segment of the Nativist movement that actively and openly promotes violence.

This is from their web site:

“Are you sick and tired of seeing your country turned into a Third World sewer by immigration? Are you tired of seeing your standard of living drop and our jobs exported to China? . . . [When you encounter voicemail,] are you tired of having to skip 1 for Spanish and 2 for Chinese? Are you tired of pressing 3 for English and getting a receptionist who barely speaks it?

“The Republicans want the cheap labor and the Democrats want the cheap votes. No one in our party [i.e. the Emigration Party] has been bought off. The Republican and Democrat leadership live in gated communities with security guards and do not have to put up with what we do. They don't care if our nation turns into a trash heap.

“America is being destroyed by a modern version of Ghenghis [sp] Khan's army. This invasion makes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor look like a pinprick. We are going to do something about it. If you are tired of this destruction, help us stop immigration and turn emigration into a flood.

“Beware of charlatans in the immigration reform movement. While the big organizations have fancy websites and expensive offices, they are doing nothing. Don't waste your time and money on organizations which FAX the Washington D.C. politicians. Those traitors know what's going on and they don't care. Congress is in terror of the NRA and the AARP but they laugh at the immigration reform movement. They won't be laughing at us much longer. . .

The Emigration Party is more than a group that spews anti-immigrant language and veiled threats. In their version of the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” they publish these lines:

“The light of the moon on the desert below,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
And what to their wandering eyes should appear,
As ten thousand invaders wreaked havoc and fear?

“They murdered our children, and poisoned our pets,
They gang-raped our women and haven't stopped yet.
More rapid than eagles the border they crossed,
To some it appeared that our country was lost.

“When a fine group of men came to answer the call,
While our government fails us, these men will stand tall.
I knew in a moment they must be the ones,
Who would fight and protect us till this war was won.

“On Spencer, on Simcox, on Patriots true,
America's future's depending on you.
To the borders you flocked to defend this fair land
While our leaders do nothing but sit on their hands.”

The lines accuse Mexicans of gang raping the women who belong to “patriots”; murdering children of patriots and feeding poison to the dogs and cats that are pets of patriots. And the lines glorify vigilante action and a war, a jihad against Mexicans. What is the response to the threat of a savage enemy in war time? The Emigration Party is out to create a lynch mob mentality, and call it patriotism. And this party is just one of about 140 such groups that are armed and active along the US/Mexico border.

Currently the Emigration Party is more organized and threatening than the Bay City Klan. While the KKK still exists, it still occupies the extreme margin. The Emigration Party is closer to the GOP than the KKK is.

4. Good Eats !! – a dinner that can’t be beat and a blog at Alice’s Restaurant

I am a Detroit oddball. So when I see vigilante groups going after Mexicans, or gays or Muslims, I can feel the hot breath of a lynch mob at my back. So I hate groups like the Emigration Party of Nevada and the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

I do not think that Nativism can be eliminated. But I do believe that it can be marginalized. We live in a free society. If Nativism is shown, as is; I think that a free people will reject it--even if they are skittish about the threat of Islamic based terrorism.

The way I propose to marginalize the Klan is by adopting a strategy described by Arlo Guthrie. He laid out a plan to end the war in Vietnam in the monologue that was part of the song Alice’s Restaurant. Guthrie told stories that exposed the absurdity of the small town justice system and of the big time Selective Service draft board. Near the end of 18 minutes and 20 seconds of rant, he encouraged his audience to go unannounced to the local draft board, sing a few bars of Alice’s Restaurant and leave.

“You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him.

“And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.

“And three people do it, three--can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out--they may think it's an organization.

“And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. And friends, they may think it's a movement.

“And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the guitar. With feeling! So we'll wait for it to come around on the guitar, here and sing it when it does. Here it comes:

You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant (excepting Alice).
You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant.
Just walk right in, it’s around the back,
just a half a mile from the rail road track
and you can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant”.

My friends, I think it is time for a revival of the Alice’s Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement.

So, if you like what you see here in this blog, forward it to a three people. Do it with feeling, (and if possible do it with three part harmony).

And if this blog gets forwarded and goes to three people—can you imagine three more people reading this blog, liking it and each of them forwarding it to three more people?--the right wingers may think it is a movement.

And can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day, reading this blog, liking it and forwarding it to three people? And friends, they may think it is a movement. And that is what it will be.

The Alice’s Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement returns. Despite the fact we will never get Alice, we can still get anything that we want.

Professor is arrested in sex sting. Conn. man sought children, police say . . . A 61-year-old adjunct professor from Connecticut has been charged in federal court with flying to Detroit to have sex with two children. . . . Irving M. Mittleman, adjunct professor in the Management Department at the University of New Haven, was arrested Saturday morning after getting off a plane at Detroit Metro Airport . . . The charge against him, trying to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, carries a penalty of 10 years to life in prison. . . [He] struck up an Internet chat with an undercover Macomb County sheriff's detective in October, believing he was talking with a mother who was offering her two children, ages 5 and 3, for sex . . . He is accused of e-mailing the detective 54 images of child pornography and recounting a sexual encounter he said he had with a 14-year-old girl and her 8-year-old sister in 2005.”

2. Dancing With Chris Hanson

This is November, sweeps month for television networks. One show that will receive a lot of air time is To Catch a Predator on MSNBC. The subject of this show is the sexual exploitation of children.

“To Catch a Predator is a series of hidden camera investigations by the television newsmagazine Dateline NBC devoted to the subject of identifying and detaining potential child sexual abusers who contact children (or what they believe to be children) over the Internet. The investigations, which have all been reported by Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen and producer Lynn Keller, are conducted as an undercover sting operation with the help of online watchdog group Perverted-Justice. Since the third installment, law enforcement and other officials have also been involved in the operation, leading to the arrests of most individuals caught in the sting.”

Frankly, this TV show is about entertainment. It is a reverse quiz show. The prize is a free vacation in a state penitentiary, and a permanent listing on the National All Star Pervs List. It is real enough for the pathetic bastards getting busted. It is real for the peacock network that garners the high ratings. And it is a guilty pleasure for insomniacs like me who tune in to MSNBC at three in the morning.

3. It’s like a slap in the face.

From the Associated Press:
Detroit Man Sentenced for Child Prostitution -Robert Lewis Young of Detroit was sentenced today to 25 years in federal prison for running a criminal operation prostituting adults and children. . . e] transported women and children and facilitated their transportation across state lines by car and airplane. Young reaped substantial financial benefit and laundered the proceeds of his illegal prostitution activities . . .

[His] sentencing comes after his plea of guilt to 26 offenses including:
sex trafficking of children,
sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion,
transportation of a minor for criminal sexual activity,
transportation for prostitution,
sexual exploitation of children,
possession and interstate distribution of child pornography,

In addition, Young was also convicted of producing and distributing child pornography for his use on a Web site

Robert Lewis Young was more than just a local pimp. His ring of scum bags extended all over the continental United States and into Hawaii. Note that in this case “transportation of a minor for criminal sexual activity,” is not someone taking his prom date from Detroit to a motel in Toledo. Also note that this case the perv sits still. He does not drive for hours to visit his underage honey, only to see Chris Hanson instead. Young has children transported to turn tricks and to make dirty movies.

Go to GOOGLE Video (yes, that same GOOGLE that you use every day) and put in a search for “young sluts” and there are about 700,000 pictures of youthful trollops and nearly 8000 hard core videos.

Editors Note:
For the record, if a person enters “youthful trollops” in that same field they will get a portrait of that “Dancing With The Stars” loser, George Hamilton. Go figure . . .

Note that in a locale like Detroit, where children are sexually active, and where drug addiction is an epidemic; some young ones will eventually stop thinking of cocaine as something nice to accompany a good vigorous youthful fuck, and start thinking of a rock as a payment for performance on demand.

Studies (http://www.icasa.org/uploads/prostitution.pdf ) claim that there are between 500,000 and 1.2 million child prostitutes in the United States. And that most of these enter prostitution at the age of 14.

That, my friends, is strictly the domestic market. It is big business. Do the math. At a modest estimate of one million child prostitutes in the United States; assuming a going rate of a double sawbuck for a blow job from a kid; assuming that a child turns only one trick a night; we are looking at $20 million a day. Also assume that pimps give their staff of young sluts Sundays and holidays off. This is a $ 6 billion a year business. If the managerial perv does not adhere to the generous labor practices noted above (Sundays and holidays off) the business is even better.

Perhaps Richard Lewis Young should be considered as the next CEO of Merrill Lynch or Citicorp.

October 2007 - The Seneca County Sheriff's Office Tuesday night commended three officers and two child protective workers for their work busting a multi-county child sex ring . . . part of a joint investigation that began in December 2005 and ultimately unearthed several victims ranging in age from 1-year-old to 15-years-old. The types of abuse and exploitation included sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, drugs and child prostitution.

October 2007 - Phoenix prosecutors have won their first conviction under a new city ordinance that brings stricter punishment for prostitution offenses involving minors. Dwight Garrels, 44, was arrested in August for soliciting sex from a 15-year-old girl.

2. Eric and slavesara

Editors Note:

Much of my work as a journalist involves doing interviews: finding people with sometimes bizarre stories to tell, and then asking them the kind of leading questions that allow them to strip and pole dance like exhibitionists for the sake of my readers. This means that I get involved with those I interview. I don’t go out to the clubhouse, or brothel, or police station. I have not had that type of physical mobility for years now. But I am the silverback of space gorillas on the Internet--so much for the back story.

A few months ago, I was wondering through the back alley of Internet chat; into a room where sexual bondage was being discussed. The subject of erotic bondage is called either “BDSM” (Bondage, Domination, Sadism, Masochism) or simply “The Lifestyle.” I had made many friends in this and other similar communities during the days when I was publishing an online magazine of classic erotic art, The Silver Tongue Quarterly.

Bondage etiquette is used in Lifestyle chat rooms. Dominant men are addressed as “Sir”. Submissive women are called girls. And the word “slut” is used as a term of endearment. Other than that, the internal social functioning is not unlike the behavior found at Meerkat Manor.

It was in this outer circle of Hades that I met Sarah and Eric. At the time Sarah was carrying an online nickname of “slavesara”. The notion of a woman identifying herself as a slave is common in the Lifestyle.

The nickname described is an online persona. This person called sara might be entirely a fiction. For all I knew “slavesara” might be either a man or a woman. She might be someone who is an authority figure during the day: an attorney; a bank president, a university professor. But it was even more likely is that slavesara was a law enforcement officer in a sting operation, trying to lure the perves out of the bushes. For all I knew slavesara might have been Chris Hanson and the video crew of To Catch a Predator at MSNBC.

Here is the story I was given: slavesara is an actual slave, owned and abused by Eric. He started his tyranny over her when she was 15 years old. And he has other little girls he imprisons and uses, The details of the abuse are so horrendous that it would sicken anyone who reads them. They certainly sickened me.

(Did I ever tell you the one about the famous trial lawyer who pays prostitutes to urinate on him? Compared to the level of perversion Eric claims that he imposes on sara and others; that aforementioned lawyer is an innocent.)

I had “on the record” interviews with both slavesara and Eric. The interviewees knew I would take their words would place them in the public domain. And beyond an email address and an online name, I could not identify either Eric or slavesara.

I had a sales worthy, though sickening, transcript. I knew what I had to do with it, and did that thing immediately.

Perhaps I am a hypocrite of the first order. I asked myself, what would Dr. Hunter S. Thompson have done with that story? The material was certainly full of fear and loathing.

I have interviewed many other law breakers and not turned them in to the police. I have heard stories told by notorious sinners and kept their identities secret. That is part of my job. Journalists will protect their sources and will go to jail rather than break the bond of confidentiality. But no such bond of confidentiality existed between Eric and myself. He wanted his story made public. So, I was not spying on him. I was interviewing him for a story that would eventually be presented to readers.

For a long time I wondered if this horrific narrative was true or not. After a while I came to believe that I was not dealing with a hoax, but an authentic case of child prostitution and human trafficking. I have corroborated many of the details of the story. I believe that slavesara is a tortured and brainwashed young woman. And I still do not know where Eric is located.

2. An invitation from a serpent

From Genesis in the King James Bible:

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden. . .

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

I have never understood this passage. Is the tree of knowledge of good and evil like a peyote cactus? Or are investigative story tellers like me the sons and daughters of Eve, with our line conceived at a time of a conversation with a serpent? Where some people wear the sign of Cain, do I wear the sign of the snake?

Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden. But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

3. Who knows what evil lurks in the minds and souls of men and women

News item from the Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- A Congolese militia leader suspected of mass murder, rape and sexual enslavement appeared Monday at the International Criminal Court for the first time and claimed he had been illegally detained in Congo since 2005.

Germain Katanga, 29, known by the nom de guerre Simba, is accused of leading the Patriotic Resistance force when it launched a murderous February 2003 attack on the village of Bogoro in northeastern Congo.

The soldiers murdered 200 villagers, raped women and girls and forced them into sexual slavery, prosecutors at the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal allege. Katanga's men -- notorious for eating the hearts and livers of their victims -- also imprisoned other villagers in a room full of corpses.

In this world, we are surrounded by evil. The news media, journalists like me, offers up a large dose of the carnage every day. You become exhausted. At those times, not even the smile of Katie Couric, a journalist, can cheer you. No one who watches the news on television can claim to be naïve and unaware of evil—certainly not you. Evidence of it is everywhere. It is as if all of us, you and I, are imprisoned in a room full of corpses.

But in this world we call home there is also freedom and responsibility. Sometimes there is justice. Germain “Samba” Katanga, the pervert, butcher, slave monger and cannibal has been arrested and is being tried for his crimes. If there isn’t a gallows high enough to hang this bastard, I am sure that one will be built.

It is my job as a journalist to tell the stories of heroism and villainy that remind my readers that they are not on a vacation at Disneyworld. We are not dancing with the stars.

Who knows what evil lurks in the minds of men? We all do.

Dear reader; when a person has knowledge of good and evil, then they must act. They must take a risk. They must accept pain while they also hurt another.

When God, as he kicked our sad asses out of Paradise, He never said that it would be easy.
